Rare Art Deco Sculpture “Sphinx” – White Glazed Ceramic by Charles Vos, Executed by De Sphinx, Maastricht ca. 1935
A rare and visually arresting piece of Dutch Art Deco, this large white-glazed ceramic sculpture of a stylised sphinx was designed circa 1935 by the celebrated sculptor Charles Vos and executed by the distinguished ceramics house De Sphinx, Maastricht.
Originally created as a shop window display, the sculpture combines mythological symbolism with modernist flair. Its bold silhouette and commanding form are softened by elegant, flowing contours—hallmarks of Vos’ sculptural language and the Art Deco movement at large.
Finished in a pure white glaze, the piece exudes timeless sophistication. The minimal colour enhances the play of light and shadow across its surface, drawing attention to the stylised anatomy and facial features of the sphinx. More than a decorative element, this piece embodies the spirit of 1930s European design: refined, modern, and evocative.
An extraordinary collector’s item or statement piece, this rare white edition brings a serene yet powerful presence to any interior.
